Tongue Piercing Not That Risky, But Things Can Go Wrong
It's hard to believe that certain things ever became popular.
Pet rocks, for example.
Shag carpeting.
Sticking a needle through your tongue.
But oral piercing, if not now mainstream, has at least become more common in recent years. According to one survey, 16% of the females and 4% of the males at a New York university had pierced tongues.
The practice doesn't appear to be any more risky than getting an ear pierced. However, if you're going for a hole in your tongue, you might want to be aware of what can go wrong.
The most common problems from oral piercing include excessive bleeding, infection and injuries to the mouth and teeth. Others include swelling, scarring, nerve damage and periodontal disease.
In the survey of New York college students, 6% of those with an oral piercing had some type of problem afterward. This was lower than the problem rates the study found for ear piercing (12%), nipple piercing (21%) or navel piercing (24%).
"Although it is uncommon, a few patients have required a hospital admission and intravenous antibiotics to treat infections of the tongue and the floor of the mouth," says Sidney B. Eisig, professor and director of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York.
Also, Dr. Eisig says, "A scar is left in the tongue once the post is removed."
There have been several cases of people cracking or chipping teeth with their piercings. One study found that nearly half of people who wore long barbells (about 1.6 centimeters or longer) in their piercings and kept them in for at least four years had some chipping of their back teeth.
Recent studies have demonstrated that the gums inside the front of the mouth are more likely to recede if the tongue is pierced. This is caused by repeatedly pushing the piercing against the front teeth. When gums recede, the bone underneath is reabsorbed by the body. This can loosen the teeth and ultimately cause them to fall out.
Dentists also suggest that some types of restorations — such as crowns made of porcelain or porcelain and metal — could be fractured by a piercing. Some recommend acrylic balls or barbells, rather than metal ones.
Jessica Clendenon, 26, first had her tongue pierced when she was 21. Since then, she's removed the barbell twice, allowing her tongue to heal, only to re-pierce it both times. Now, she says, "The third time's the charm. I have no intention of taking this [piercing] out."
Jessica, an associate account executive for a Baltimore communications firm, says she's never had an infection from any of her piercings. But then, she followed the after-care directions to the letter.
"For two weeks, I had to rinse with Listerine every time I ate or drank anything. I took a travel-size bottle with me everywhere," she says. "I think it's likely that most people that get infections probably don't take care of themselves afterward."
Along those same lines, she says, "Some people play with [the barbell] or chew on it. It seems to me that's why their teeth crack."
Initially, Jessica did have some swelling, but she says the area was completely healed after about two weeks. After her second piercing, she noticed sores on the gums near her bottom teeth, which led her to remove the barbell. Today, she says, "If my dentist thought [the piercing] was posing a serious problem to my gums and teeth, I would take it out."
Piercings also can interfere with eating and speech. Jessica says she had to "learn to talk all over again, especially Ss and Ts." Now, she says, "Mostly no one can tell I have my tongue pierced. I consider the barbell like any other piece of jewelry, like earrings or a bracelet. "

i still rmb p1 orientation when i was late, and my very first friend AMANDA CHIN who later became my bestfriend until huihui had to change seats with me and thats how we drifted apart. then i sat next to deanna(?) and near elizabeth khong and elizabeth young and pearl (we were seating in groups). me and deanna would talk to each other often at night. she was somehow like my bestfriend. and i was also close to elizabeth khong (ek) and elizabeth young (elizabeth) and pearl, then elizabeth changed seats with this girl called sabrina(?) and we drifted apart from her. so it was left with me pearl and ek. i guess when i was close to the both of i them i wasnt exactly that close to deanna as before. then amanda changed seats with this girl and she ended up in the same group as us. she sat next to this girl call janal(?) i rmb she use her saliva to clean smth on the table, im not to sure. so me, amanda, pearl, ek were like a clique. if i aint wrong, i was sam, pearl was clover and ek was alex and amanda was jerry from totally spies!! i admit i use to treat my friends like damn shit, seriously, especially pearl. i would like use her money to buy stuff and all and i always acted like i was the boss to them. i am rly rly sincerely sorry guys! once when i was having my bday party i invited amanda pearl and ek. amanda and i went swimming while pearl and ek played badminton. and amanda like almost drowned but luckily my father pulled her out from the water. i rmb amanda said that she would be the last to go back home cos she stays nearest to my house (she also lives at watten estate, bout 5-10 min walk away) but she ended up being the first to leave followed by pearl then ek. then something happend between me and pearl (think its my fault) then we became like enemies. and when we were going to go to p3 next year and had to change classes i hoped that she and ek would not be in the same class (ya i know). amanda went to 3f (smart class!) pearl went to 3g, i went to 3h and ek went to 3i. but then ek went to china during p3. but she came back like every year for like a week or 2 or 3 or 4. (she's now in singapore!! she studies and RGS with amanda! damn smart ppl) so this pretty much sums up my p1 & 2.

at p3.............................. (damn lazy)............... we kept on changing form teachers and once i had a form teacher which was my distance aunty and i didnt know till some time later! p3 i kinda kept on changing the ppl i hanged out with, i dont know why either. then i stuck with nat and weijing then anthea ltr kinda joined..... blahblahblah. then dont know what happen i ended up with jade lee. she was like my bestfriend. we did everything tgt. i would always stayover her house for like dont know how long, we'll bath tgt, change tgt, eat tgt aiya everything tgt. and her maid fifi! gosh i miss her! she made the best spaghetti ever! we'll always go out with fifi also! then brenda hsiung joined. I MISS BRENDA. she was super understanding super nice super crazy over avril and yellow! then dont know what i couldnt tahan jades temper anymore then dont know what happen and we splitted up. we'll i've gotta admit i still do miss you and the times we've spent tgt. and when we were going to p5 next year and had to change class i prayed that me and brenda would still be in the same class and jade would be diff (ya i know) and yay cos me and brenda rly did go to the same class, 5i! so that sums up my p3 & 4.

okkkkkk so this is gonna be a VERY long post zzz...

so as my punishment for doing not so bad for my mye, i only can use the comp once a day for 1HOUR infront of my parents, i have to off my phone once i get home (no way), i only can go out once a week for a few hours only (wtf as if), and lastly my allowance will be cut (like the worst thing only im dead broke -.-). and when sch re-opens i have to "dress like a student" infront of my parents. fuck you teachers.

a few days back mavis, xuanhao, aarongoh, johnson, weechong came to my condo. mavis left early and the guys kept on going to the girls toilet wtf. the guard caught xuanhao and weechong so now they're ban from my condo U SEE LA PLAY SOMEMORE PLAY SOMEMORE!

went to sentosa on mavis's birthday and yeah i had a great time except for the parts when the guys kept on pushing, pulling, dragging, and all sorts of other stuff, me into the water, when got alot of sand in my panties and bra, like uncomfortable only HAHA, when saltwater and sand went into my eye, damn pain pls!! got burried under the sand and i was a homo. have boobies and a dick haha! germaine left early then had a surprise. cab home with xuanhao and willis after that hahah wo bu ke qi (correct?) ask the cab driver to go all the way inside my condo, under my block. hehe the guys had to walk to the mrt. sorry! da xiao jie mah (correct?) !

monday, went to mavis house with ben, zhiwei and huihui

did art and i did ALOT ^^ the rest were just playing tsk!

her cats are super adorable and dobbie is just super acitve!

left at 5plus and her mum drop us of at lot1

met aaron(goh) and several others then back home

ooooo & did i mention i helped huihui do his prep work for art

like EVERYTHING! kind or what ^^

tuesday, westmall with germaine, aaron(seah), zhiwei, ben, mavis and huihui

mavis ben huihui zhiwei bought tickets for

ANGELS&DEMONS

and they also bought for me

was quite reluctant to go but still went in the end

(i dont like to watch movies with friends in theaters,

waste time + money, unless its horror!)

though the movie was quite nice la. u should watch!

went lot1 later on with them, walked around, library, then left.

today, no school.

and i feel very pathetic cos im stuck at home -.-

yesterday was out with mavis huihui aarongoh zhiwei ben to jurong point to do art but failed. In the mrt, HAHAHHAA aaron all horny A- & C- HAHA! Reached there and walked around the entire place doing, nothing . Headed to library opp jp and got chased out. Back to jp then to hdb playground. Back to jp and walked around then macs. Mrted and all of us dropped off at cck except mavis. Mrt everyone was horny (but me :P) EEEEE! Aaron, huihan #2. huihui, huihan #3. ben, huihan #4 and mavis, huihan #5 HAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA!! Reached cck and 985 with huihui, dropped off then went to aunts house. Back home then conf with mavis ben huihui from 9 - 10.30 then 11 - 3.30

sooooooooooo the past few days has all been about exams,

aaron & mavis coming to my house,

meeting xuanhao huihui afterwards

yesterday, watch UNINVITED (super nice + scary!)

with mavis xuanhao willis huihui ben leroy

lot1 later on then left for home with mavis

met huihui later on at cdan

today, lot1 with germaine mavis ben huihui xuanhao willis aaron(goh?)

aaron left then went to xuanhao's house

watched them play mahjong

fetch germaine to bustop, bought snacks&drinks then back

huihui left, rest of us went to play/watch badminton

mavis ben xuanhao me back to xh house and we were stuck outside -.-

stupid xh i alr tell him to keep the key properly then he go and lock the door and throw the key back into the house!!!!!!!

LUCKILY we use some long thingy to take it back phew

talk + alot other things then back home at 6.15

IM SUPER TIRED NOW, HAVING HEADACHE, HAVE PANDA EYES

BUT I STILL DONT WANNA SLEEP YET
